hooray for police wives

Have you seen the list of polive wives, girlfriends, and mothers I have over there on the right? And those are just the ones that have blogs. That doesn't include the ones that are milling around on forums and that are following without blogs or have private blogs. I'm just impressed with the growing numbers.

A few months ago, at the height of isolation with a husband in the academy and working, a newborn, and not knowing a soul in law enforcement, I did a google search for police wives. I tried variations like, Police blogs, police wife blogs, etc. The search essentially turned up nothing except some forums which are great, but I wanted blogs. The very first one I found was Married to the Law (hi cops wife!). And it was exactly what I needed and was looking for. I reached out in desperation and total cluelessness, and found a "kindred spirit" so to speak and then through the weeks and now months, I have connected with so many other police wives. It truly is amazing, helpful, and fun. I know that I can say anything, ask anything, and I will be answered, understood, and comforted.

It's also helped me have a way of connecting with HF. I know it helps him that I am fully embracing this lifestyle and looking for my own little niche within the community. I am happy, even excited. I may not understand everything he tells me right now, but I know that through reading other wife blogs, and especially the cop blogs, I will learn more, understand more, and just know that there is a world full of "others" which is essentially what I was looking for.

So I just want to give a special shout out to all the wives, girlfriends, fiances, and mommies. So glad to have found you all. I add them when I find them. I think there's more than 30 now!

And don't even get me started on my favorite cop/dispatch/medic blogs. That's a post for another time.

What are your favorite police-related blogs to read? Any recommendations?

Fav police wife blogs? Yours of course!

Well, the Fierce Beagle and Martin Enterprises are the tops too.

Awe thanks Slamdunk!

I like Meadowlark—she's so spunky and is totally comfortable being her own person. Love it.

I'm so happy to have found your blog! My husband works as an officer for the city of phoenix, and just passed his 6 month mark recently. I wish I would have found your blog when he was still in the academy! I really enjoy reading your posts and realizing that I'm not the only one who has to do the restaurant seat-shuffle. Your blog (and your police wife links) are wonderful and definitely inspiring - this job of police wife isn't always easy!

Yikes--my apologies to Meadowlark--a vote for her as well.

I love "Walking a Thin Blue Line". I of course love reading any blog dealing with police wives! I am also new to this whole experience and am glad to have found so many blogs to help e understand a little bit more! Keep posting! I love it!

OK suckups... I am NOT sending any (more, in Erin's case) jam.

I'm not even a real cops' wife blog. I'm a "I don't have any real world friends and am unemployed so I talk about useless crap" kinda place. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

That said, I haven't registered at policewives.org. Guess I'll have to get it done.

Let me be the first one *not* to suck up to Meadowlark! Sheesh. As if she wasn't full of herself enough already! I happen to be partial to my own husband's blog (iamtomisbehave). But, then again, I may be bias. He's one of your followers so you know he has good taste. :D

I've never really put myself out there as a LEO wife either. It's just one part of who I am--albeit a large part, but still merely a part. But I'm glad that we're all in this together!

Meadowlark said...

OUCH.

You cut me Dori. Real deep.

:)
ps. Dori is just mad because I'm one of the few and the proud. I love you anyway Dori, signed your biggest fan.

Now, there's a comeback! :D

Mrs. Fuzz, I apologize on behalf of Meadowlark--coming in here and hijacking your comments. Marines. Whatcha going do?

Hi Mrs. Smith- I need to join policewives.org as Mrs. Fuzz. I'm on there as my real self, but that doesn't really work with this whole anonymous thing I'm trying to pull.

Erin, Slamdunks- agree about Meadowlark as well.

Lindser-lou- Can I add one of your blogs to the police wife links? Thought I'd ask. Some people aren't comfortable with it.

Leah-Totally in the same boat as you.

Paula-Thanks! i always love the comments you leave.

Hero's Wife- I'm in the same boat as you as well. Except I think you guys are in a much crazier place than us!

Dori, Meadowlark- *shaking my head* Must be a marine thing. :) You guys were there from the beginning of my police wife search. I always love what you all have to say and I love your matter of factness. You guys make me laugh.

Actually, I like your blog! You write mostly about LE stuff, and when you don't, it's funny and interesting.

Thanks for the linky love. I love that I was there for you in the begining. I have had other blogs and there were a few bloggers that fit that role for me and I was so grateful!!

Amen, Sister! I've been wanting to post about "kindred spirits" too, but didn't want to sound like a suck-up (though I'd LOVE some jam, Meadowlark!) ;)

If it wasn't for Kimber, I would've been completely lost and alone as an LEO wife, and it's been a pleasantly surprising experience to discover so many different wives married to the law.

Thanks for posting this!

Awww, thanks!! Couldn't agree with you more - an inner world of security and understanding through communication. I haven't visited PoliceWives.org in a while, but I was once there daily.

I am girlfriend of a police officer. He is halfway through the academy. It is really tough. Probely one of the hardest things I have ever gone through. I just really need some people to talk to, that actually understand what we are going through. My friends just don't understand. It would just be nice hearing from some people who know where I'm at right now. I can't say how much I would appreciate talking to some of you. So any advice you can throw my way would be amazing.

Thanks ... Linds

Hey Linds- I don't know if you'll come back to this post to check comments, but I'll answer you here for now. I have my email address posted on the sidebar if you want to talk that way. I can't access your blog through your name.

First of all, I am still very new at this myself. Husband is on the job 6 months. I would say that the academy days are the hardest. He was the most stressed, the busiest, the grumpiest, and he began changing in a lot of ways. I had never known him to be grumpy, and now he seemed grumpy all the time! There were so many things "I just didn't understand" and I was more than willing to be supportive and learn things.

I don't have any police wife or girlfriend friends and so online is the biggest support I've found. The police wife forums are a great place to talk and a lot of the police wife blogs I have listed are an incredible resource. A few of them have husbands in the academy right now as well or are just finished. Some of the more seasoned wives or girlfriends have very insightful and supportive things to say. Married to the Law writes a lot about these issues, Just One Moment in Time is still in the academy, that's all i can think of right now.

I promise you that things will definitely be easier when he's done with the academy. You won't stop worrying about him and there will always be challenges that are unique to those in law enforcement and the ones who love them.

Some days are hard. Some days are awful. But some days are great and there's a lot of excitement and pride that comes with being part of the LEO life and community. I tend to look for the positive, so I'm always looking for the things that are funny and unique in this life. Husband is still learning and adjusting and he recognizes my efforts and my contributions.

You deserve a lot of credit for being the girlfriend of a guy that's going to be a cop. Start a blog, reach out to police wives like you did to me, write about your frustrations, worries, successes, etc. and you will find a TON of support that way. It's been the most helpful thing I did.

i hope this helped a little. Please keep talking to me and/or other wives & girlfriends on here. You will find a world of support.

I was thinking about starting a blog myself and was wondering if you could give me any advice ? I thank you for creating such a supportive place! Thanks!

I've been doing the police officer wife thing for 25 years. From the line to detective of auto theft to homicide and now Sgt of homicide. From the first year, I needed to connect with others in the same boat. Nice to see some things don't change! Good luck with your marriage and family and hope you have many great memories and experience.
