MISTAAAAAKE!

Ever since I saw this clip on Scrubs a long time ago, whenever I make a mistake I hear the opera man singing, "MISTAAAAAKE!" in my head. Last night was one of those nights. HF mentioned to me casually, "Just so you know, the text messages you send me on my work phone are discoverable. So in a trial if my phone gets subpoenaed, any text messages are discoverable."

He let that sink in for a minute.

It only took a few seconds, but opera guy sang out, "MISTAAAAAKE!" loud and clear in my mind. I don't think I will ever send any "lovey dovey" texts ever again.

I don't know if my romantic texts would have any influence on a case involving HF, other than embarrassing us, but I did read this article over at Police One involving a case in New Mexico. I had never considered before that cell phone records could be used in court. If you talk to your loved one while he or she is on duty, do you have rules for what you can and cannot talk about?

Gosh, I can't say that we DO have any rules...I'm guessing that I better set some up though!!! I can only imagine the embarrassment!! You should count your lucky stars you have Opera-Mistaaaaaakkke-Guy...may I borrow him as well?? :P

Well then. That'd be one blushing court clerk who had to read OUR texts out loud...and it'd be way more funny than embarrassing.

Rules? Not really...but we don't text about work details--sometimes it's a "Surrounded by idiots...share when I get home". No way, really, to connect that to work...

A friend of mine went through a fairly icky divorce and her ex's cell phone texts were entered as evidence of infidelity. Everything's admissible!

Uh-oh. This post wouldn't even have applied to me until yesterday. We got new cell phones that come with unlimited texting (the first time we've ever had that) and it's super easy to text him now.

It was also cop wives night last night amongst the city and county leo wives, and we were having a LOT of fun with some texts going back and forth.

I blame it on my hubby though that sent me a pic of him striking the David pose, and it all went downhill from there....

Part of why I'm glad I just have a personal phone and work didn't give me one - makes it easier to keep it to ourselves. :D

I don't think I even have OH's work cell number ... THANK GOD! I'm pretty sure some of the texts I've sent would embarrass me for life! We're more careful about what we say on the phone since every once in awhile OH comes home with a story about someone forgetting about their buttons and everyone on the radio can hearing what they had to say. That could be worse ... ;o)

My husband is required to have a cell phone yet they don't provide him with one. Who would have thought that some police forces actually shell out the money for work phones? What a novel idea. He uses his own personal phone which sucks, but hey, he can still get some mushy messages from his wife!

For a split second my eyes skipped over the detail that it be a "WORK" phone, and my heart stopped.

Whew!

The county informed Dh that if he uses his personal phone for work related stuff, that it would be usable! I put my foot down, because even though there has never been anything questionable between us, I would be pissed if they ever tried to get our phone records! I think this is ridiculous, and the idiot lawyers are to blame! Gah!

I know my DH would be at a HUGE disadvantage if he did not have a cell phone while on duty. However, the dept does not issue them so he uses his personal phone which hasn't been a problem (insofar as minutes/number of texts used). One of his coworkers deducted her personal phone use as a job related expense on her taxes & when she got audited was told she could not deduct unless her dept *required* the phone...... hm.. not in the general orders but yet would be incredibly inconvenient (dare I say near impossible) to do his job without it.....? Yes, they have radios but there is LOTS of stuff you don't want on the radio!!

No sooner did I comment, then J tells me he's signed up his personal phone in addition to his swat pager, so he won't have to carry both around. And that lately it's been post discussion, if they use their personal phones for business use, they are subpoenable. (I think I just made that word up?)
