Perplexed: an HF update

These two things have me scratching my head lately:
  1. A package arrived in the mail. It contained a black Miami Classic shoulder holster. HF ordered $200 of "leather gear" without discussing it with me. I told him he is lucky he works nights because otherwise I would force him to lie awake with me all night while we "talk" about this. He loves the shouldre holster by the way. I call him Don Johnson, or sometimes I prefer the more familiar, Donnie.
    2.   HF has gone from looking like this (more or less):
to this (more or less):
Diego from Go Diego Go.
I have been calling HF Diego for a good part of a year now. I know a lot of you might disagree with me, but I don't find the tactical look the sexiest look of all. I admit, there are things that have grown on me over time, but mostly, I roll my eyes when he comes downstairs wearing his getup. When he's going to the range, or doing some training or whatever, not a big deal. It's another story when he and I are going out. I understand the need for functional clothing while concealing a weapon (or two or three. . .), but comeon!

Over the last few months we have been working out a compromise. Finding clothes that don't make him look like he's going to host the American Outdoorsman. That's all fine and dandy if that's the look you are into, but when he takes me out, that's not who I want to be with, you know? For example, last year he found these "awesome" fly fishing shirts at Sam's Club that would be great to wear at the shooting range not only because of the pockets, but the material was such that it would keep him cool. There was even a flap on the back of the shirt that helped to "cool him off". Okay. That's great. Just don't wear it to the mall with me or out to dinner! (which he tried to do every single time!) He loves this stuff. He dresses pretty much everyday like the "casual" or "off duty" section of the Police Headquarters magazine. Maybe I'm being a total brat, but I really detest the "Diego" look. Maybe that's why he's consistently doing this. . .

How do you (if you are an officer) or your LEO dress when off duty? Normal clothes? Just a size bigger to help conceal the gun? I've told HF not to worry. When I go shopping for him, I will make sure that the clothes I buy will still allow him to do this if when he needs to:
Die Hard images with Bruce Willis

Oh, and by the way, one of my favorite places to look for images now, thanks to HF, is imfdb.org. It's got tons of stills from pretty much any movie using guns. It's awesome. So if you are looking for any cheesy awesome action movie images, look no further. You can search by gun, movie, or actor. HF said I would thank him for telling me about this website. He's right! I love it.

My Wife is also in the process of changing how I dress. She doesn't like that I wear clothes that are a size too big. She understands why I do it (hide the weapons), but she is convinced she can help me dress better and still hide the weapons. She is doing a good job so far.

Oh I'm not alone! I thought DH was the only one who didn't know how to dress himself for life outside his uniform. He constantly looks like he's getting ready to go to the gym-- even though he doesn't even have a memberships!

When I was in the profession, the Mrs. finally conceded defeat. Hopeless...

Chancho wears an under shirt and jeans. Sometimes, I can get him to put something nicer on, but it's a rare occassion. He also hasn't been clothes shopping in about 4 years...

Husband used to have a tendency to wear his black sweats and black t-shirt when hanging around the campfire. Until he was "made" by some neighboring campers who asked "So, what department do you work for". It acted as a wakeup call. He now dresses more normally. And wears a lot of stuff from the concealed carry lines of clothing.

ps. i suggest you nip the "without talking to me" in the bud. It's cute in the first couple of years... it's aggravating as h*ll when that money was earmarked for new school clothes for the little ones. Ask me how I know. :/

It is always khaki cargo pants (or shorts) and a collared shirt that he can wear untucked. In summer he has a good selection of Hawaiian shirts (like any good cop) but also some other random plaids or prints. In winter he has a bunch of lumberjack flannels (and a few nicer ones). I'm not crazy about how he dresses but it always matches and doesn't look awful so... I pick other battles! Like, can you please wear something BESIDES tennis shoes All. The. Time.?!?!?!

p.s. my word verification is "dorapup" ~ as in diego's cousin?!?!?! ha ha ha

Jeans and a Tee-shit...Jeans and a Polo...Jeans and a Hoodie. Boring. I say...my Lawman has a nice body...work it! :P
I realize he oversizes alot of the time because of his weapon...but seriously...you can still look good!

Hubby wears exactly what he wore BEFORE he was in law enforcement... carhart jeans and long sleeved t's. Boring. I'm trying to get him to change it up a bit with Levi's or SOMETHING...

Also, Hubby isn't exactly comfortable with wearing his gun when off duty. There are times that I'm glad of this as he looks at EVERYONE as though they were about to take us out... EVERYONE. Sigh...

My hubby wears pants that are just a bit bigger than he used to wear. He and I joke because he often says, "does this gun make me look fat??" Hehe!!! It cracks me up!! :)

My husband wears mostly work out clothes-he is more obsessed with Cross-Fit work outs than his SWAT position I guess :o)
He really doesn't seem to have a problem hiding his weapon when we are out and about...I usually can't even tell if he has it.
He refuses to use a shoulder holster though like HF because he says if he gets in a fight it is an easy thing to grab and swing a person by...and then take their weapon.
Yeah, so maybe I"ll just be glad he surfs work out sites and wears under armour all the time :o) I love that you used the Diego example, cracked me up.

Hey, Mrs. Fuzz, thanks for the comment on the bentos and painting. The painting was actually tough for me, but I enjoyed it after I got into it. Hope to do more. And I completely agree about striving for balance. That's something we have in common.

I feel like I would love the look of the "gear" involved in your hubby's profession, but I could see how it would get old if he wanted to wear it out on the town. Of course, I'm a big homebody, so I wouldn't want to go out much, and seeing him at home in that getup would make me feel safe and protected. Or, not so much. It might just make me feel like, enough already! Stop spending $200 on leather! I could have used that for multiple massages. Or pedicures. Or a very expensive dinner at a restaurant where it would be inappropriate to wear "gear" or look like "Bruce Willis."

You are so funny, I loved this post!

I carry my gun in a holster purse almost all the time. Since I'm an investigator, I don't need to put it on my duty belt unless I have to be in uniform on a rare occasion.

I have to wear dress clothes everyday to work so off duty, I'm pretty much a jeans and sweater girl!

BTW, my DH isn't a cop, but he loves wearing outdoors clothes like North Face, Mountain Hardwear and Patagonia! Go Diego Go!

Indubitably wears an array of things but a lot of what the other ladies have mentioned here. Jean, hawaiian shirts, police tees...

Oh, wait! Harley tshirts. He has like thirty of them. A conversation when he returns from a trip.

"I went to the Harley store while I was there."

"Oh yeah? Buy anything?"

"Got a new shirt."

"No kidding."

Then he proudly shows me his new Harley shirt whenever I see him next.

We'll sometimes wives just have to walk that extra mile... Its a loving act that make wonders for the family especially with the relationship with the husband....

A little patience, a little more understanding and a little more support will do the trick ( but that makes it a lot don't you think(?))

@Meadowlark: JB had a similar "busted!" moment: a friend of a friend at a party casually asked whether he was Cal Fire or a cop. He practically lost his teeth. Turns out her dad is a retired fire chief. She pointed out the fact that JB was wearing service boots, a white t-shirt, jeans, and a shaved head. He was dumbfounded, mainly because this is his off-duty uniform, but that's even more of a giveaway. Especially the service boots and the high-and-tight jar. Gee, baby, ya think? Not bitter, really! Sometimes he wears a gray hoodie, JUST TO SPICE THINGS UP.

@Sister Copinherhair: Oh, that made me lol! :)

This had me laughing out loud! OH hasn't changed the way he dresses except that he has spent way too much time finding the "perfect" holster that fits into his front pocket and looks like a wallet. He's still a hoodie, jeans and flip flop kind of guy!

Ahhh I'm laughing at this b/c The Mr. just got a wardrobe makeover this past Christmas. I made him dispose of every t-shirt that had a whole in it. His comment was Ok but what am I going to wear? Alas when we go out no more t-shirts. I got him a fine selection of polo and rugg-be shirts. Color was the 2nd change to his clothing. I added colors aside from the everyday blue and black he is ALWAYS wearing. I desperately wanted new clothes as any woman would but the whole T-shirt thing HAD to change. I know a LEOW who's guy is always sporting Hawaiian shirts and he's never been to the island. Anyway so now The Mr has something to conceal the "tool" and look nice at the same time. LOL

For going out recreationally, I'm a jeans and t-shirt guy. Not a ratty t-shirt mind you, but HCO or Ambercrombie... so I wear a .380 off-duty which can be hidden pretty easily.

The only problem I find is church, where I wear a button up shirt, but I have to dress in a style that lets me leave it untucked to cover the gun. It'd be nice to be able to tuck a shirt in every once in a while. Otherwise, all those squats are really for nothing :)

Great comments from everyone. So funny. I especially was surprised to find out about all the Hawaiian shirt wearing. We havne't come to that road yet, but I'm sure that HF loves the idea. He said that 5-11 makes shirts in that same style of cut, but they are you know, black, and other muted colors.

Christopher! Good to hear from ya. One of HF's reasons for getting a shoulder holster was so that he could wear his suit to church. I admit that it less noticeable than his other holster, but is that REALLY why he wanted a shoulder holster. . . That's debatable.
